Duathlon Season Opener

Well, it's official, I just registered for my very first sprint duathlon. I've been talking about maybe getting into duathlons for the past year or so. A few weeks ago I went to the USA Triathlon website and purchased my yearly racing license.

A USAT license is good for the following sports:

1. Triathlon: swim-bike-run
2. Duathlon: run-bike-run
3. Aquathlon: run-swim-run
4. Off Road: like the Xterra series of off road triathlons which is swim-mountain bike-trail run
5. Winter Triathlon: run-mountain bike-cross country ski
6. Other Multi Sport Disciplines: for example Aqua Bike, which is swim-bike

On Sunday, February 8th I'll be participating in the Duathlon Season Opener which takes place in Tradewinds Park in Coconut Creek, Florida. This race is part of the Amerprise Financial South Florida Triathlon/Duathlon Series of 7 races. You can do the races as either a sprint triathlon, or a sprint duathlon. I'm not into swimming, so I'll be doing the duathlon option.

I'm already freaking out, but each leg of the race is pretty short, so I should be okay. The race consists of a 1 mile run (or 400 meter swim for the triathlon option), a 10 mile bike ride, followed by a 2.5 mile run. I don't have a problem with the biking portion, I participated in a few 15K time trials last year, but the running is going to be challenging. I have done two slow, half marathons, but running shorter distances, fast - my legs aren't going to know what to do!

ING Miami Marathon Weekend

Hello everyone,

I spent a good part of the weekend down in Miami for the ING Miami Marathon. Registered runners had to pick up their registration packets at the Health Expo. The expo, which took place on Friday and Saturday, was setup at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

I did ING Miami with two of my running friends. I meet them in Boca Raton on Friday morning, then we all drove down to Miami. We got there a bit early, so we asked one of the locals if she could tell us how to get to Starbucks. She was holding a cup of Starbucks coffee in her hand, so we thought she would know how to get us there. Starbucks was just a few blocks away from the convention center, so we went down, got something to drink and a snack, and sat outside to enjoy our breakfast. Then we headed back to the convention center.

We got lots of free goodies at the health expo including chapstick, water bottles, wrist bands, samples of nutritional goodies and more. We also picked up our race packets which included a detailed brochure of the ING Miami Marathon, an official ING Miami Marathon t-shirt and baseball cap, along with our racing bib numbers and timing chip. After picking up all our stuff at the expo, we headed back to Palm Beach County.

On Saturday morning I had to go to West Palm Beach for the 2009 Spring Team in Training season kickoff. My husband and I are getting ready to start our 4th season with the TNT cycle team. We will be helping the Palm Beach team train for the century ride in Tahoe, AKA America's Most Beautiful Bike Ride, which takes place on June 7.

After the season kickoff, I rushed home, finished getting ready for Miami, then drove to Boca to meet my friends. We decided to get a hotel room the night before the marathon, so we didn't have to get up quite so early, and worry about finding a parking spot that wasn't too far from the start of the race.

We stayed at the Miami Hyatt Regency, which was approximately .9 miles from the start of the race. We got checked into our room, then decided to walk down to the American Airline Areana, the official race start, to see how long it would take us to get there. It only took around 20 minutes to walk down there. The arena is right next to the Bayside Mall, so we popped in there for an early dinner at the HardRock Cafe.

Since we had to get up at 4 AM, to get ready for the race, we were in bed by 9 PM - not exactly party animals! For tomorrows blog entry, I'll post up details of the actual marathon - the good, the bad, the how far to the end of the race?

Run Diva at ING Miami

Hello everyone,

This weekend I'll be spending some time down in Miami. Sunday, January 31 is the ING Miami marathon. I'm still pretty new to running, so I'll be doing the 1/2 marathon - 13.1 miles. ING Miami will be my second half marathon. I competed in my first half marathon on December 7, 2008 at the Marathon of the Palm Beaches.

I'll be riding down to the Health & Fitness Expo on Friday morning with a couple of my friends. We have to pick up our race registration packets at the expo. Plus there is going to be a TON of stuff to see at the expo, and hopefully lots of free goodies!

We're riding back down to Miami on Saturday night, as we've decided to get a hotel room the night before the marathon. We'll be staying at the Miami Hyatt Regency, which is just a few blocks from the start line. We weren't looking forward to getting up at 2 AM in order to drive down to Miami and try and find a place to park, that wasn't too far from the start line. So getting a hotel room the night before the race seemed like a good idea.

I hope to see a bunch of my friends down at ING Miami - should be a super weekend. I'm going to try and remember to bring my camera with me to the health expo, so I can post up some pictures on Run Diva in the next few days.

Welcome to Run Diva

Hello,

Welcome to the Run Diva site. Run Diva is a brand new blog that is run by a chick, AKA Lynn Smythe, that loves all things related to running.

After a 18 year hiatus from running, I decided to add running back into my fitness routine. I decided I wanted to attempt a marathon, before I got too much older. On December 7, 2008 I competed in my first half marathon, at the Marathon of the Palm Beaches in West Palm Beach, Florida. On January 25, 2009, I will be running the half at the ING Miami Marathon - wish me luck!

Marathons, half marathons, 5k, 10K, trail running and other running events will be covered on Run Diva. Multisport events which include running, such as duathlons, triathlons and Xterra events, will also be covered on Run Diva.
