The study, conducted through the Chemistry of Sport class taught by Dr. Patti Christie, took 25 athletic individuals with various running abilities and put them through an eight-week distance running program. The research was based around running 4x800m or 4x1600m repeats while holding a constant heart rate.
The first set of intervals was done in traditional EVA foam-midsole running shoes the participants started the program with, while the latter was done in Newton Running Trainers (Gravity and Motion). That preliminary data revealed that all of the runners who completed every workout recorded faster times in the final interval wearing Newton shoes. Results showed that 77 percent of the runners ran faster on two or more intervals wearing Newtons and 55 percent of the runners were faster on every interval.
"The results were statistically significant," says Christie, who is continuing the study with a new group of runners this spring. "It indicates there is a more efficient way to run. And if you combine the Newton Running technique, 'Land-Lever-Lift' with the Newton shoes, there was definitely a significant difference."
If you were to run barefoot along a smooth sidewalk, your body wouldn't have you impact on your heels because it isn't engineered to accommodate the blunt force trauma of repeated heel striking. Through increased forefoot communication with the ground Newton shoes allow for the body's natural propensity for a light forefoot landing, foot leverage and a lifting of each new stride (instead of pushing off) known as the 'Land-Lever-Lift' technique.
Newton Running's patented 'Action/Reaction forefoot technology' encourages Natural or Barefoot Running Gait and enhances the shock absorbency, leverage and energy return in the forefoot. Newton's Independent lab research shows the system returns up to 28 percent more energy and reduces impact up to 44 percent when compared training and racing shoes offered by leading running brands.
The basis of natural form and midfoot/forefoot running gaits has been around for decades, much of it derived from the super-efficient form elite runners have been employing for years.
"It's not new, it's just that most runners have either gone away from what they used to do or they were never taught the proper way to run in the first place," says Malcolm Balk, a Montreal-based running coach, form guru and competitive masters runner who teaches The Art of Running workshops in Canada and the United Kingdom. "I think the most important thing is that you need to keep braking to a minimum if you want to reduce muscular effort and the impact that goes with it."
Danny Abshire is the co-founder of Newton Running, a Boulder, Colo.-based company that makes shoes that promote an efficient midfoot running gait. He has been making advanced footwear solutions for runners and triathletes for more than 20 years.

Gold's Gym Debunks America's Most Common Fitness Myths
Company's Fitness Experts Shed Some Insight on Nutrition and Fitness Misconceptions
DALLAS, July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- As Americans hit the gym this summer
to continue to tone up for the beach, Gold's Gym, the world's leading
authority on health and fitness, is exposing some of the most common
myths about getting in shape and offering the must have nutrition and
fitness facts to help everyone reach their individual goals. From
muscle soreness after a workout, to the timeless argument of running on
a treadmill versus running outside, the fitness experts at Gold's Gym
have put together a list of the top myths surrounding diet, exercise
and fitness to help Americans maximize their gym experience.
"There is so much conflicting information about how to get in shape
that it's no wonder people can get confused," said Robert Reames,
Personal Training and Obesity expert of the Gold's Gym Fitness
Institute. "We want to give Americans the clear cut answers to these
common myths so that they can focus on reaching their goals and
achieving lasting results."
Reames has identified the seven most common gym myths, and reveals
the truth behind these misconceptions. Gold's Gym is also facilitating
a discussion on these and other gym myths on its national Facebook page
at www.facebook.com/goldsgym.
-- MYTH #1: 1,000 crunches a day will guarantee you a six-pack.
FACT: There is no such thing as "spot reduction," but there is such
a thing as spot conditioning. Muscles can be conditioned by training
and focusing on them, but without burning the fat covering your
abdomen, you'll never get that washboard stomach.
-- MYTH #2: It's only a good workout if you're sore the next day.
FACT: Soreness is related to a number of factors, none of which
directly correlate to muscle growth. In fact, Delayed Onset Muscle
Soreness (DOMS) occurs when nerve endings become inflamed after micro
trauma to muscle tissue. In short, don't overdo it.
-- MYTH #3: Women get "bulky" or "masculine" if they lift weights.
FACT: Women simply don't have enough testosterone to attain the
appearance of a male body builder. The muscle you are able to build
lifting weights will only improve your appearance for a toned, sculpted
and feminine appearance. Also, weight training builds muscle density,
which is key to fighting osteoporosis.
-- MYTH #4: Exercising long and slow burns more fat.
FACT: Your body uses fat for energy while exercising at a lower
intensity, but training at a high intensity will burn more calories
during and after you've stopped working out.
-- MYTH #5: If you beef up on protein, you'll gain muscle.
FACT: Everybody needs protein to rebuild and repair muscles, but
overloading on protein will get you nowhere. There's only a certain
amount of nutrients your body can handle before it just turns to waste.
According to the American Dietetic Association, six to seven daily
ounces of lean meat provides enough protein for most athletes.
-- MYTH #6: Running on a treadmill is better for your joints than pavement.
FACT: Joint pain surfaces anytime your body is pounding on a surface
it isn't used to. To avoid jolting your neurological system, it is best
to vary workouts between treadmill and pavement running. Elliptical
machines and recumbent bikes can also be used in place of running.
-- MYTH #7: Muscle turns to fat if you stop lifting weights.
FACT: Muscle cannot physically turn into fat, however muscles can
begin to atrophy (reduce in size) after eliminating weight training
from a fitness routine. In addition, metabolism will slow down and
hinder the ability to burn as many calories, which results in an
increase in body fat.

Bothell, Wash. – June 17, 2009
Leading running company Brooks Sports, Inc. (www.brooksrunning.com) announced today the upcoming launch of the Green Silence, a groundbreaking competition racing flat that boasts a sustainable element in each part of the shoe. Using soy-based inks, water-based adhesives, and recycled materials, Green Silence incorporates sustainability—without sacrificing performance—into every stitch of the shoe, which hits retail February 1, 2010.
In recent years, Brooks has declared its dedication to introducing more eco-friendly design and manufacturing practices as well as more sustainable materials. In 2008, Brooks launched its proprietary BioMoGo midsole, the world’s first biodegradable running shoe midsole that breaks down 50 times faster than traditional midsoles in an enclosed, active landfill. That same year, the company debuted a new shoe box, made of fully biodegradable, 100-percent recycled paperboard. The Green Silence, which will retail for $100, represents another chapter in Brooks’ commitment to environmental responsibility.
“Brooks believes it can continue to lead the running industry when it comes to sustainability,” said Jim Weber, president and CEO of Brooks. “Our latest attempt was to create the most sustainable competition racing flat as technologically possible, without compromising the performance, durability, or aesthetic appeal of the shoe. The result is the Green Silence, which lights the path to bringing more eco-friendlier elements into our future core performance training shoes.”
With direction from Future Concepts Manager Derek Campbell, Brooks spent three years researching sustainable materials and practices to build a shoe that would not only make an eco-statement, but would also successfully deliver the premium performance and durability expected from Brooks.
Green Silence was constructed with less than half (48 percent) as many parts as comparable shoes. Only 26 parts comprise each Green Silence shoe compared to approximately 54 parts in similar styles. And, more than 75 percent of the 26 components have been recycled by consumers. For example, heel counters are made of recycled compact discs; shoe laces, meshes, linings, gillies, and tongue webbings are made from recycled water bottles; and outsoles are made of recycled rubber. These substitutions reduce the energy (41 percent less) and oil (.5 liter less) needed to manufacture each pair of Green Silence shoes.
The dyes, colorants, and adhesives used in production are non-toxic and not harmful to those working in the factory. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were lowered by 65 percent. The midsoles, collar foams, and sock liners are completely biodegradable, which reduces waste when the shoes are eventually retired to an active, enclosed landfill.
What’s in a name? Brooks’ Injo Gunasekara, senior industrial designer of footwear and the creative mind behind the Green Silence design, selected the shoe’s name as a nod to its eco-friendlier character (Green) and the belief that sustainability will soon become a consumer expectation rather than a marketable product differentiator (Silence).
“We were told Brooks couldn’t build running shoes that feel great, perform great, look great, and support a healthier environment for years ahead,” said Campbell. “With Green Silence, we shattered that belief. We hope this shoe will serve as an inspiration to others in our industry and beyond.”
By employing its Design for Environment (DfE) approach to the development of Green Silence, Brooks learned key sustainable practices that will flow into the design and production of future footwear offerings.
The running and broader footwear industries recently honored Brooks with public high-fives for the brand‘s sustainability focus. In 2008, Brooks was awarded the 2008 International Green Award from Runner’s World, the 2008 Green Award from Footwear News, and the 2008 Sprout Award from Trail Runner.
For more information about Brooks’ Green Silence and other sustainability initiatives, please visit the company’s Green Room at www.brooksrunning.com/Green+Room/.

Cocoa, FL (April 2) – Former Olympian and “America’s Coach”, Jeff Galloway, will return for the 38th running of the Space Coast Marathon and Half on Sunday, November 29 in Cocoa Village. The course, which is Florida’s oldest -- and the nation’s only -- space-themed marathon and half, treats participants to spectacular beauty as it winds along the shady banks of the Indian River.
“This is a well-run event, in a beautiful part of the world,” said the former Olympian, who has run more than 120 marathons and has coached more than 200,000 athletes from around the globe to do the same. “I believe that this race is one of the hidden treasures in the world of marathons.”
But the secret is getting out.
Since Galloway’s initial visit four years ago, Runners World magazine has dubbed the event “Race of the Month” (2008) as well as the race with the “Best Schwag” (2007).
“I believe that we have one of the most unique marathons in the nation,” said Don Piercy, co-owner of Running Zone, the event’s race management company. “As the race is held within the shadow of the Kennedy Space Center, our entire event revolves around a space theme. What other race offers a race start with a Space Shuttle countdown and liftoff on a Jumbotron or a chance to take a picture with the
astronauts?”
“There are Space props along the course and at the finish; volunteers in NASA-like uniforms and spacethemed aid stations. In addition, all finishers receive the most awesome astronaut medal and a ‘space certificate’ to recognize their accomplishment.”
And it is not just the space theme that has caused event participation to more than triple since 2005. Post-race athlete surveys conducted in 2007 and 2008 showed that participants believed both the Space Coast Marathon and Half provide the biggest bang for the buck in terms of value, experience and individual support.
“Both my wife, Denise, and I are runners,” said Piercy. “We care about each and every participant and
want to make sure that each person feels special, has great course support and a wonderful experience at our event. You’re not just a number at our race.”
Here’s what participants can expect throughout this year’s space-themed weekend:
· Jeff Galloway – keynote speaker
· Two-day health and fitness expo
· Pace teams to help set a personal record
· Official long-sleeve moisture-wicking, technical race shirts
· Corral starts and ChampionChip timing on a USATF-certified course (Boston qualifier)
· Aid stations at every mile
· Large beach towels with race logo to all finishers
· Astronaut medals and ‘space certificates’ to all finishers
· A full pancake, egg & sausage breakfast plus pizza for all finishers
· Photo opportunities with astronauts at the pre-race dinner and race site.
For more information or to register for the race, visit www.spacecoastmarathon.com.
The Space Coast Marathon enjoys generous sponsorship from All Media Graphics, Bright House
Networks, Brooks Sports, Cumulus Radio, the Cocoa Cola Company, Culligan Water, Florida Today
newspaper, Four Points by Sheraton, Health First Health Plans, Kennedy Space Center, the Maxwell C.
King Performing Arts Center, Radisson Resort at the Port, Sandpiper Sportswear, Space Coast Office of
Tourism and Space Coast Runners.

I've decided I need to sign up, and pay money to join a local marathon training program. I've been training on my own, but have a serious lack of motivation. I figure if I pay cash money I won't miss any trainings - HA-HA!!!
The last time I was at the Runner's Edge store, I picked up a brochure on their marathon training program. According to the brochure: "Running a marathon or half marathon is a great accomplishment. We offer the most professional program run by runners. We know what it is like for all levels of athletes from the walk-run participants to the advance runner. We are south Florida's largest running store and are here to help you accomplish your goals."

Did you know that coffee is America’s number one source of antioxidants? Yes, number one! It’s even higher in antioxidants than that of green tea. And the news gets even better from here: decaffeinated coffee contains the same amount of antioxidants as caffeinated coffee. Why are antioxidants so important? They protect us from toxic free-radicals that can set us up for cancer, stroke, diabetes, and heart disease. Studies have shown that coffee, in general, has been found to be the “new health food.” It can reduce Parkinson's disease by up to 80%; Colon Cancer by 25%; Liver Cirrhosis by 80%; and even help people with Type 2 diabetes. Drinking coffee cuts the risk of gallstones; heavy drinkers have reduced risk of heart problems and liver disease; it can help manage asthma in the event of an emergency attack; is mood lifting and can treat headaches; can lower your risk of cavities due to the compound Trigonelline; and has been shown in studies with children who drink milk in their coffee, that it can even ward off depression! For athletes, coffee has been shown to boost performance so well, that its consumption is monitored by the Olympic Games Committee and has been deemed as a “controlled substance.” Try taking along a water bottle full of your favorite “iced-down” Christopher Bean coffee with you on your next training session. You can get that added boost you might need from drinking a totally natural plant-derived, healthy cup of coffee. So drink your coffee; it’s good for you! Christopher Bean: More Than Just Coffee—it’s a Lifestyle! |
