I compete in a variety of cycling and running races throughout the year. My favorite type of racing is participating in duathlons. Duathlons are sort of like a triathlon, but instead of swim-bike-run, duathletes run-bike-run. Saturday, April 3 was my first duathlon of the 2010 race season. I participated in the Egg Hunt race which could be done as either a sprint triathlon or a sprint duathlon. The race took place at CB Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, Florida.

Run Diva's Duathlon Race Results
Just FYI, here are my race results from the sprint duathlon. This is one of the few races I'll be doing this year that is on a course I've raced before, so thought it would be interesting to see how I did this year compared to last year. I originally put this list together for my coach, Matt Goforth, of the On Your Mark bike shop.
Last year the race was held on March 1, and was called the Chilly Willy Duathlon. At the time, it was only the 2nd duathlon I had ever raced. This year the race took place on April 3rd and was called the Egg Hunt Duathlon and was my 12th duathlon competition. Last year I had to walk a bit on both runs, this year I ran the entire time - YEAH!
My overall finishing time was 5 minutes and 51 seconds faster than last year. For some reason, they did away with giving out overall and masters awards at the end of the race. So although I was a lot faster this year, I only placed 5th in my age group. If overall and masters awards had been given, I would have placed 2nd in my age group. Oh well, I am really happy with how much my time has improved since last year, guess I shouldn't be too concerned about the awards.
Age group awards are given 5 deep, so I still got an award, but since I didn't make the podium, I didn't stick around for the awards ceremony. I'm waiting for my 5th place medal to arrive in the mail. The medal looks like an enameled Easter egg, so I guess that will make a pretty cool addition to my trophy case.

That's a pretty good improvement for a sprint distance race. And I wasn't at 100% with my breathing due to a recent bout with bronchitis. And I still loose huge chunks of time on the turns. So bridges and turning are two skills I need to work on with the tri bike. I just bought my Cervelo P2C triathlon bike in October, so I still don't have that much time on it. I'm hoping my skills and racing times will improve once I've gotten a few more training rides under my belt.
Run Diva's Race Schedule
My next race is the Olympic distance duathlon at Tri Miami on May 2nd. That race takes place at Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. The Olympic distance duathlon is a 1 mile run - 25 mile bike - 6.2 mile run. The bike portion goes over William Powell bridge on Rickenbacker Causeway 4 times - IIIEEEE!!!! That will be fun, and to have to do a 10k immediately after getting off the bike - can you say jello legs?
My complete 2010 race schedule can be viewed here: Run Diva's Races. A complete listing of south Florida triathlons and duathlons can be found on either the Multirace.com or Publix Fitness Family Weekend websites.
