Independence Day Race
Sunday, July 4th marked the date of the 20th annual Independence Day race held at Tradewinds Park, in Coconut Creek, Florida. The race was put on by Multirace.com and was part of the Publix Fitness Family Weekend series of triathlons and duathlons.
Sprint Race Distance
The Independence Day race could be done as either a sprint triathlon, or a sprint duathlon. I am not into swimming, so I chose the duathlon race. Due to confusion, at some of the previous Tradewinds Park races during the run portion of the race, the run course was slightly altered. It used to be a 1 mile run, at the beginning of the duathlon, with a 2 1/2 mile run at the end for both triathletes and duathletes. The course has been changed to a half mile run, at the beginning of the duathlon, with a 3 mile run at the end for both triathletes and duathletes.
There still seemed to be a bit of confusion, as the longer run meant racers had to do two 1.5 mile run laps for a total of 3 miles. I was standing near the finish line, after I completed the race, when I felt someone grabbing my arm. A girl was confused as to where to go to complete her second run lap. As I was pointing out where she was supposed to go a spectator walked her over to where she was supposed to be running. YIKES!
This is the only photo of me on the bike at the race. I like the upper arm definition, those twice a week weight lifting, core work sessions with my personal trainer are starting to show results.
Sprint Triathlon
- 400 meter swim
- 10 mile bike
- 3 mile run
Sprint Duathlon
- 1/2 mile run
- 10 mile bike
- 3 mile run
Run Diva's Race Results
There were 15 girl's signed up in the 45-49 year old age group. That's a lot more competition than I normally see at these local duathlon races. I was worried that I wouldn't receive an award, age groups are awarded five deep. But I ended up getting 4th place in my age group.
One girl must have not shown up for the race, because there were only 14 girls in my age group on race day, and 2 of the girls placed in the Master's category, leaving 12 girl's in my age group. So 4th out of 12 is pretty cool. My daughter says I didn't have a good race, I usually place 1st or 2nd in my age group, and every so often I manage to place in the Master's category. So a 4th place medal wasn't impressing my 14 year old daughter, got to love kids!

This may seem like turtle speed, but both my run and bike times are slowly starting to improve. I just raced the Tradewinds Park course back in June, here's a comparison of my run and bike times.
- Run1: 8:47 pace in June, improved to 8:22 on July 4.
- Bike: 19.65 MPH in June, improved to 19.78 on July 4.
- Run2: 10:48 pace in June, improved to 10:30 on July 4.
Turtle power rules!!!!
