Run Diva Races CB Smith Duathlon
On Saturday, August 28, I participated in a race at CB Smith Park in Pembroke Pines, Florida. The race could be done as either a sprint triathlon or a sprint duathlon. I participated in the duathlon; which was a run-bike-run format.
Race Location
- CB Smith Park
- 900 Flamingo Road
- Pembroke Pines, FL 33028-1002
- Website: www.broward.org/Parks/CBSmithPark/Pages/Default.aspx
CB Smith Park Race Distances
The race started and ended at the park. The swim portion of the triathlon and the run portion of both the duathlon and triathlon took place entirely inside the park. The bike portion consisted of two loops in and out of the park for a total of 11 miles. Race participants left the transition area on their bikes and did a counter clockwise loop inside the park, then they left the park and did a clockwise loop on the main roads outside of the park and repeated this route two times for a total of two inner and two outer park loops. The bike course was flat as a pancake, but involved quite a few turns.
Sprint Triathlon
- 1/4 mile swim
- 11 mile bike
- 3.3 mile run
Sprint Duathlon
- 1.65 mile run
- 11 mile bike
- 1.65 mile run
Run Diva Race Results
I had a good race, and finished in a time of 1:05:19. That was 1 minute and 58 seconds faster than the last time I raced at CB Smith Park. So my finishing time was a new PR for that course, and I won 3rd place Female Masters Overall. Masters are the three fastest finishers over 40 years old. And looking at the official results, I chicked 20 guys, SWEET! Getting chicked is when a guy gets beaten by a girl. Guys and gals compete for different awards, but it's still a thrill to beat a few guys - WOOT!
- Run 1 - 12:43 = 8:12 pace
- Transition 1 - 50 seconds
- Bike - 36:20 = 18.31 MPH
- Transition 2 - 55 seconds
- Run 2 - 14:49 = 9:33 pace
- Total time - 1:05:19
- 41 out of 88 overall
- 12 out of 39 women
Problems at the Races
I don't mean to be a race snob, but I see way too many newbies at the races with no clue as to what they are doing. Multirace.com has a pre-race clinic the day before each of their races. The race clinic covers the basics for anyone new to the sport of triathlon and duathlon races. I highly recommend anyone new to racing attend one or more of these clinics.
At Saturday's race I was passed by a couple of bikers on the right hand side during the race. That is a violation of official USAT rules. You can only pass someone on the left hand side. When someone is coming up from behind you and they shout out "on your left" it means we are about to pass you on the left. DON'T move to the left hand side!
If a race official catches you violating any of the rules, you will receive a 2 minute penalty for your first violation, a 4 minute penalty for your second violation and you will be DQ, i.e. disqualified if you are caught a 3rd time. Learn the rules of multisport!!!! I also saw a young cyclist on the course drafting for over 1/2 mile. USAT rules state ride on the right side except when passing, you have 15 seconds to pass on the left, once you are passed you must allow a minimum of 3 bike lengths to open up between you and the person that passed you before attempting to repass that person. So drafting off of someone for 1/2 mile is totally illegal.
Photogenic Run Diva
There are always a few official event photographers out on the race course. They are independent contractors that work for Event Pictures. I usually get the digital download package of photos and use the photos in my blog posts and race reports that I send to the various companies that sponsor me. Normally there are between 8-10 photos of me taken at each race, but at the CB Smith race I had a total of 23 photos taken.
Maybe the event photographers recognized me as the Bike Diva? I had a couple people come up to me at the race saying "hey, aren't you that girl from the website?" So who knows? I've added a few of those photos to this blog post, all 23 photos have been uploaded to my Facebook page: www.facebook.com/bikediva.
Other Duathlon Race Reports
My next duathlon race takes place on September 5 at Lummus Park in Miami Beach. I am looking forward to that race as it has a longer bike portion compared to most sprint distance races. The Lummus Park duathlon is a 1 mile run, 18 mile bike and 4 mile run. The bike portion includes two loops up and over MacArthur Causeway bridge.
Here are a few links to some other duathlon race reports I've posted to my Bike Diva and Run Diva blogs.

Hi June,
Thanks for stopping by the Run Diva blog. :)
I just checked out your blog! I do a lot of races out of Crandon Park in Key Biscayne, so maybe we'll get a chance to meet someday.
Take care,
Lynn

Hi! I found your blog recently and I've been reading every post since, going all the way back to the first one. I am inspired! I recently took up running and I'm also interested in cycling and duathlons (I don't swim). I'm in Miami, I see you are in South Florida as well.
Anyhow, I just wanted to say hi and tell you that I love your blog and that maybe one day we'll be in the same race!
