Athletic Sponsorship

I've been racing since 2008 and have a few companies that sponsor me each year. I am 48 years old and an enthusiastic age group amateur athlete. I try to look for companies to sponsor me in a few key areas each year:

1. running gear and accessories - running shoes and run clothing
2. bike gear and accessories - helmets, sunglasses, wheels, clothing
3. sports nutrition - gels, blocks, recovery drinks, etc...
4. personal care products - sun screen, lip gloss, anti-chafe cream, etc...

What is Brooks ID?

According to the Brooks website; "Brooks I.D. stands for Inspire Daily. The 800+ members are active in their running communities and share a passion for the Brooks brand. They are runners who are winners in their own right: Winning their age divisions, accomplishing their personal goals, pushing their limits, and encouraging others to do the same."

Brooks has been my run shoe sponsor for the past few years. Here is my history of sponsorship with Brooks.

• 2009 - Brooks ID member - monetary allowance plus deep discount on additional purchases
• 2010 - Brooks ID member - deep discount on purchases
• 2011 - Brooks Fanatics member - smaller discount on purchases
• 2012 - Brooks ID member - generous monetary allowance for free gear plus deep discount on additional purchases

For the 2011 race season, Brooks had stricter requirements to become a member of the Brooks ID program. Many former Brooks ID members were switched out to the Brooks Fanatics program. My pet peeve with the Brooks ID sponsorship was that they never had a good way to report race results for anyone that wasn't a pure runner. So for someone like myself that raced mainly duathlons, and now triathlons, I couldn't report the results of those races. I participate in 15-20+ events per year, but only only a few of them are running only events.

In the fall of this year I decided to send Brooks a copy of my 8 page sponsorship proposal. A few weeks later I received an email inviting me to apply to the Brooks ID program for the 2012 race season. I filled out their on-line application and heard back from them a few days ago saying I was accepted back into the Brooks ID program for the 2012 race season, SWEET!

I got back into the Brooks ID program as influential member of the media, not because of my spectacular race results. I have 3 sports blogs, I'm very active on both Twitter and Facebook, and I participate in close to 20 races per year. My husband and I have volunteered since 2006 with Team in Training to help raise $$ for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, he is the cycle coach for our local Team in Training chapter and I have mentored two cycle teams. I am also active in a couple of running, cycling and triathlon clubs where the members see all the gear I train and race in.

My Favorite Brooks Gear

I have a ton of Brooks running shoes in my closet. When I find a pair of shoes I like I have a tendency to start stock piling the shoes so if the shoe is going to be retired, I will have a pair or two in reserve. I wear different shoes depending on the type of training and racing I do. Except for my trail running shoes, I like very minimalist/neutral, lightweight running shoes.

Here are my current favorite Brooks shoes:

Brooks Launch - my go to shoe for longer training runs and for racing half and full marathons. This is the kind of shoe most of my running friends use. It is a bit stiffer than I like to run in now that I made the switch from being a heel striker to a mid-foot striker a couple of years ago. I still use the Launch for longer races where I'm worried about fatigue setting in for the last few miles.

Brooks T6 and T7 Racer - lightweight racing flat. I wear the T6 sock-less for races up to 5k distance and for my sprint distance triathlons. I'll usually use them with a pair of thin socks if I'm going up to 10k distance or doing an Olympic distance triathlon. I loved the T6, which Brooks no longer makes, so I have a pair of the T7 waiting in my closet for when my T6 need to be retired.

As a triathlete I am always looking for ways to shave a few seconds off my race time. I come out of the swim with wet feet, I don't wear socks with my bike shoes so I started thinking about going sock-less on the run. I've gone up to 7 miles in the T6 and T7 without socks. My advice if going sock-less, start out with short runs and use a lot of Body Glide or similar anti-chafe product all over your toes and heel.

Brooks Green Silence - I'll wear these for training and racing up to 8 or 10 miles. A cool shoe, made out of recycled products, available in lots of funky colors. Yup, I like really loud/obnoxious colored run shoes, part of the reason why I love the Green Silence.

Brooks Cascadia 5 - very stiff shoe with lots of traction. Great trail running/off road shoe. A lot more shoe than I normally like but I've had problems slipping/falling/twisting ankle every time I go for a trail run so I decided a more stable shoe is what I need when trail running.

Brooks Pure Grit - I wear tested a pair of these minimal trail running shoes in the spring of this year. I actually never wore them on the trail and only wore them for road running. I really loved these shoes, they were like wearing slippers! I wore them to death and recently wore them for the last time at the south Florida Warrior Dash. Everyone donates their shoes to Green Sneakers at the end of the race so I need to purchase another pair of Pure Grit for myself. Run Diva at 35th Annual Shamrock Run

The other day I posted up information about the 35th Annual Shamrock Run to the Run Diva blog: 35th Annual Shamrock Run. The run took place on Sunday at John Prince Park in Lake Worth, Florida and could be done as either a 10 mile run or 5k. It was a bit cool when we first got to the park, but it started to warm up once the sun came out.

Team in Training

My husband and I participated in the 5k run with members of our Team in Training triathlon team. We normally do a bike-to-run brick workout every Sunday with the triathlon team. Our Coach, Louis Blanco, wanted to do the 5k run and mapped out a short bike ride which we could do in the park before our run. We had a nice 12 mile warm up in John Prince Park which was perfect for getting our legs and lungs ready for the race.

Daylight savings time began that morning, so the night before we had to set our clocks ahead one hour. That meant it was still dark out when we got to the park. The night before, my husband placed lights on the front of our bikes and small blinky lights on the bike bags attached underneath our seats on the back of the bike. That way we would be visible to any vehicular traffic that we might encounter inside the park. I haven't been on a night ride in quite awhile, I forgot it is a kind of eerie feeling, not having very good depth perception while you are riding your bike. I could hear myself crunching through sand and gravel a couple of times during the ride, even though I couldn't actually see the sand and gravel, ignorance is bliss?

Official Shamrock Run Results

You can look up the official results of the Shamrock 10 mile and 5k runs on the Accu Chip website: www.accuchiptiming.com. Official race photographs are available on the Wildside website: 2011 Shamrock Run. The Shamrock Run was a new 5k Personal Record for me. My previous best 5k time was 27:22 at the November 2010 Turkey Trot held in Delray Beach, Florida.

Run Diva's Race Results

• Distance: 5k = 3.1 miles
• Time: 27:03 = 8:43 pace
• Age group: 4 out of 33 women 45-49
• Gender: 47 out of 239 women
• Overall: 106 out of 372

27 year old Owen Thomas won the 5k race in a time of 16:48, while 17 year old Sofie Ingram was the 5k overall female winner and finished in a time of 19:24. WOW, that's super speed fast compared to my running ability, AWESOME!

Team Odwalla

I've recently become a member of Team Odwalla. Part of my duties as an Odwalla sponsored athlete is to race in my official team uniform and hand out samples of the Odwalla bars. I wore my Team Odwalla triathlon shorts and running singlet for the 5k race and got a lot of complements on the colorful uniform.

Since I was racing the Shamrock run, I decided I probably wouldn't have time to hand out Odwalla samples, so I brought samples of the Odwalla bars to Saturday mornings swim training with my Team in Training triathlon team. I ran into two members of Team Odwalla that were handing out samples of the bars at Sunday's Shamrock Run; Brian Proctor and Seth Waller, pretty cool to meet some of my fellow team members.

Team Synergy Triathlon Sponsorship

Comfortable Clothing

I just went out for a short 5.3 mile run to test out my new Sugoi gear - very comfortable. I am not a tiny girl, I'm a whole lot of women - WOOT! So I appreciate tri specific shorts that are a normal length, some of those running shorts and tri shorts are way too short. I do not have skinny chicken leg thighs, okay!?! Tomorrow I want to try the new clothing on a brick (bike - run) workout to see how comfortable the outfit it while on the bike.

I'm also considering the Sugoi compression gear. But will probably wait until I loose a few more pounds. I've lost 20 pounds during the past year, but I am still a healthy girl. I have visions of cramming my flesh into compression tights and top and looking like Shamu wrapped in cling film - not too sexy!

Speed Laces Advanced Shoe Lacing System

Gear Head
I started racing in duathlons this year, and am always looking for any gear or equipment that can help me get a bit faster. Duathlons are similar to triathlons, but instead of swim-bike-run, duathletes run-bike-run. That means duathletes have to transition out of and into their running shoes two times during their race. On T1, the first race transition, we switch from our running shoes into our cycling shoes. During T2, the second transition, we switch from our biking shoes back into our running shoes.

I knew having to tie and untie my laces during a typical race would eat up too much time. I started researching different options for getting my running shoes on and off quickly. There are a bunch of different quick shoe lacing systems available including Lock Lace, Yankz and Speed Laces.

Sample Time
I contacted Cindy Garbarino, Sales Manager for Speed Laces, to inquire about having some samples sent to me so I could test them out. She sent a package of samples which included a set of zero friction fittings and two colors of the Ibungee stretch laces.The ibungee stretch laces are available in a ton of awesome colors including red, navy, light blue, pink, neon yellow and Florida green. I chose the neon Florida orange to install on my Brook's Launch shoes. WOW, I think I need sunglasses to look at my shoes now, that color combination is a bit bright, makes my eyeballs vibrate!

 

zero friction fittings

The ibungee stretch laces can be installed with or without the zero friction fittings. The other quick lacing systems I've tried don't have this option, so I decided to install the zero friction fittings on my new Brooks running shoes. The zero friction fittings are made out of plastic, and get attached to your shoes using tiny plastic screws. You remove your old laces, then choose six locations on each shoe to attach the fittings to. It works out to having a zero friction fitting attached to every other hole on your shoe.

Brooks Running

I had just received a pair of Brooks Launch running shoes, so I thought I could try the Speed Lace system on my new shoes. And yes, I have wide feet, so I got a pair of the men's shoes for my spatula feet. Brooks T6 racing shoes, which I use at all my races, are only available in men's sizes, so I don't have a problem racing/working out/training in men's shoes.

Besides, I think the color of the men's Launch are way cooler than the women's version. Yup, I may not be a very fast runner, but I have to look cool at my events. And the men's Launch matches the color of my latest tattoo - guess I'm not a girly girl. Pink and purple and ribbons and bows make me want to PUKE!

Quick Lace Systems for Everyone
The beauty of any quick lacing system is that they can be used with any type of lace-up shoe. I've installed different brands of quick lacing systems on my Nike hiking shoes and my spinning shoes, along with all of my trail running and running shoes. I don't think I'll ever go back to regular laces, too time consuming and BORING!

 

Can I put these in my trophy case and have a spot light shinning on them? Freaking awesome!

Speedy Feet
Once your Speed Laces system is installed on your shoes, you simply slip your feet in and out of the shoes. No more tying and untying, no more worrying about your shoes coming untied during a race. You can adjust the shoes tighter or looser with the cord-lock, but I find once my Speed Laces are installed, I just simply slide my feet in and start running. No time to adjust the fit, I'm racing, get out of my freaking way!

Run Diva at Shamrock Run

On March 9, I posted up information on the Shamrock Run to the Miami Running Fitness Examiner page.

The run, which took place on Sunday, March 15, started and ended from John Prince Park in Lake Worth, Florida. I did the 10 mile Shamrock Run in a time of 1:45. Although slow by most runners standards, this was a personal best for me.

I started running less than 1 year ago, so I was quite please with my results. My minute per mile pace is slowly but steadily improving and I have managed to loose 24 pounds since I started running - SWEET!

Fluid finds major success at TRI FEST!

Tucson, AZ With a tune-up and four new tires, The Fluid Mobile headed Southeast this month for the 2nd Annual TriFest in Tucson, AZ. Fluid Founders Richard Smith & David Brown logged over 1400 miles to join the biggest players in the multisport industry. Attendees journeyed from around the globe for the conference and expo, hosted by Trisports.com. Seven time Ironman World Champion Dave Scott was also in attendance, and was the guest speaker of Friday evening's banquet. Team Fluid provided mechanical and nutritional support for the annual Friday morning ride up Mt. Lemmon, a 6,000 ft cycling climb over the course of 25 miles. Look for video of this ride coming soon! Fluid was also able to connect with local sponsored clubs, including the University of Arizona's TriCats (one pictured right), as well as Arizona State's Triathlon Team. Industry attendees included our friends Trigger Point massage therapy and SPIbelt, both from Austin Tx. Founders Rich & Dave, pictured below, had both the pleasure and pain of a 60 second maximal effort cycling test to evaluate their power output. Dressed in jeans and flip flops, the guys jumped right in for a whole lot of hurt. Don't let those smiles fool you! Overall, the trip was a great success, but we are glad to be home!
